Dual Diagnosis? The Delicate Balance of Mental, Physical Health in Young Adults

In this episode of Hartford HealthCare’s More Life podcast, Dr. David Bendor, Clinical Coordinator of the Young Adult Medical Track at Hartford HealthCare’s Institute of Living, discusses the challenges faced by younger people with a dual diagnosis of behavioral and physical health conditions.

“We’re working with young adults between 18 and 26,” says Dr. Bendor. “These are young adults who are struggling concurrently with both chronic conditions such as asthma or cystic fibrosis, chronic pain or heart disease, as well as psychiatric conditions . . . depression, anxiety, PTSD and bipolar disorder, to name a few.”

He shares some compelling stories, one of a college freshman with a GI disorder who was in such physical and emotional distress he was not able to leave his dorm room to seek the care he needed, and another young athlete who suffered a freak injury that ended his athletic scholarship and his goals.
