CHH Surgeon Performs 100th Robotic-Guidance Spine Surgery

Orthopedic surgeon Mitchell Garden and the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Operating Room staff recently performed their 100th spine surgery using a revolutionary robotic navigation platform called Globus ExcelsiusGPS.

“I want to congratulate Dr. Garden and our entire surgical team on this major milestone. This achievement is a testament to their skill, dedication and willingness to embrace new technology for the benefit of our patients,” said Bimal Patel, Charlotte Hungerford President and Senior Vice President, Hartford HealthCare. “It also demonstrates Hartford HealthCare’s commitment to bringing robotic technology like Globus to our community hospitals, increasing access to more advanced procedures locally.”

The Globus device, purchased by CHH in 2019, is used to assist surgeons treat conditions that would require spinal fusion, including degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, fractures, and spinal tumors. Patients with these conditions often suffer with debilitating symptoms like low back pain, leg pain, sciatica, uneven legs, hips or shoulders, abnormal gait and breathing difficulties when the ribcage puts pressure on the lungs.

“The device allows us to perform spine surgery with incredible precision,” said Dr. Mitchell Garden, an orthopedic spine specialist. “It is designed specifically to make it safer and help surgeons ensure implant and hardware placement are even more precise. Minimally invasive procedures using robotic guidance can mean less blood loss, less muscle damage, and faster recovery,”

This technology is designed to improve safety and accuracy within the operating room and provides improved visualization of patient anatomy throughout the surgical procedure. It helps to streamline the surgical workflow and reduce radiation exposure to surgeons and staff. It is also the world’s first technology to combine a rigid robotic arm and full navigation capabilities into one adaptable platform for accurate trajectory alignment in spine surgery.

Charlotte Hungerford Hospital specialists are skilled in caring for various spinal injuries and conditions with nonsurgical and surgical approaches, including those using the Globus ExcelsiusGPS™ guidance system. For more information call 860.496.6561.
