Rushford Middletown Finding Success With Young Adult Outpatient Program


For young adults experiencing some hard times and challenges in life, the team of experts at Rushford Middletown know exactly what they are going through.

Clinicians have developed an innovative program that is specifically geared toward young adults ages 18 to their late twenties that provides therapy treatment addressing topics such as mental health, substance use, transitions, relationships and more.

“This uniquely structured psychotherapy program utilizes Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and education with a focus on key concepts including mindfulness, mood-regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal skills. Together in groups we explore many ways to help people get back on track,” said Lana Zakhour, MSW, Clinician at Rushford.

A wide range of treatment options and peer support available

The program features on site case and medication management, including Suboxone and other forms of medication assisted treatment, and easy access to detox and/or residential care as needed. There is also a Recovery Support Specialist who have been successful in their own recovery process and help others experiencing similar situations. Participants meet three to five times a week for four to six weeks.

The experienced and caring staff of Rushford at Middletown understand that often times addiction is complicated by mental health issues such as depression, anxiety or trauma. Clients at Rushford at Middletown have access to mental health consultations and treatment from our on-staff psychiatric providers and clinicians.

“We want young adults and their families to know we are here for them and that there is professional and compassionate assistance to those going through substance use and other issues,” said Carolyn Camire Ruutel, LCSW, Clinical Program Manager.

Currently the Rushford adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program has same or next day availability and transportation assistance in many cases. It has returned to in person but an online zoom option is available to clients with legitimate permanent barriers such as distance as well as those with temporary obstacles like a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.
