The Heart and Vascular Institute at Backus Hospital continues to expand to provide even greater access to top notch care to the people of Eastern Connecticut
In January, fellowship trained vascular and endovascular surgeon Akhilesh K. Jain, MD, RPVI, FACS began seeing patients at the Hartford HealthCare Medical Group office at 164 Otrobando Ave in Norwich. The office is equipped with state of the art vascular laboratory which offers non-invasive diagnostic testing for a wide array of vascular conditions including carotid artery stenosis, abdominal aortic aneurysms, arterial evaluations for peripheral arterial disease and venous duplex testing.
With this initiative, Backus brings vascular and endovascular surgery, interventional radiology and cardiology to provide comprehensive multidisciplinary care to the patients with variety of vascular conditions.
“Whether it’s vascular surgery or electrophysiology, more and more we are offering services locally that patients would normally have to drive to Hartford to receive,” says John Foley, MD, Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Service Line Hartford HealthCare Medical Group. The vascular lab is staffed by a dedicated registered vascular technologist Monday through Friday 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
“Our goal is to offer the full spectrum of care in the community whenever possible. With our connection and coordination with the Hartford HealthCare Heart and Vascular Institute, the patients with more complex needs can seamlessly receive services at Hartford Hospital if needed”, says Dr. Jain.
Dr. Jain earned his medical degree from the University College of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India; served residencies in general surgery at West Virginia University/Charleston Area Medical Center and Maulana Azad Medical College/Delhi University (New Delhi, India), and completed at fellowship in Vascular Surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was awarded the Fellowship of American College of surgeons in 2016. His areas of interest include abdominal aortic and iliac aneurysms, thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissection, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), limb salvage surgery (open and endovascular), carotid artery stenosis, renal and mesenteric vascular disease, acute pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, and popliteal artery aneurysm
“The addition of Dr. Jain and the opening of the vascular lab at Backus, demonstrates Hartford HealthCare and Backus Hospital’s commitment to providing the highest quality care inside our community. These additions are great news for our patients and valuable resources for our local providers,” says Backus Hospital President Bimal Patel.
